This lake has a shoreline of 71 miles. 49 miles of it is in the state of California and the remaining 22 is in Nevada State. Lying at an altitude of 6,000 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe never gets frozen. Approximately, a tenth of an inch of water from this lake evaporates each day. The only source of outlet for this lake is the Truckee River.


The water in the tenth deepest lake in the world has a temperature of 40 to 50ºF during spring and it shoots to 65 to 70ºF from August to September. The temperature of water here remains at a constant of 39ºF, after a depth of more than 700 ft. The water is cold here and it prevents gases from forming. Normally, Tahoe’s climate is very dry and the humidity levels are low.
The boundaries of South Shore of Lake Tahoe extend from Emerald Bay to Rubicon Point which includes part of the Western Slope and Alpine County. While the north shore extends from Kings Beach to Incline Village.

Though Lake Tahoe has only two months of winter, all snow sports facilities are available here. There are certain Lake Tahoe hotels which provide skiing packages. Many companies provide facilities for snowmobile treks.

During summer this lake’s public beaches are fit for swimming or basking in the sun. There are lots of trails for hikers in this area. Tahoe Rim Trail is prominent among the trails here.

Top-drawer golf courses are available in Lake Tahoe. They include Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno which hosts PGA Tour. American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament is held at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Famous legends like Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones have contributed to the development of many fairways in Lake Tahoe. The lake’s crystal waters are ideal for powerboats, sailboats, canoes etc. are available on rent.

For nightbirds, Lake Tahoe is a very happening spot. Casinos share space with bars and restaurants featuring performances by classical/jazz musicians to rock bands. The arts thrive in Lake Tahoe. The Sand Harbor Shakespeare Festival held every year in the month of August is a special occasion for many theatre buffs.

Lakeland Village Beach and Mountain Resort, located on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe, is one of the better hotels in town. It is close to the ski shuttle and casinos. Go for the rooms at the loft, they are large and spacious.

Holiday Inn Express South Lake Tahoe’s is a neat property. It is conveniently located close to the lake, casinos, shopping and restaurants. Rooms are clean and are well equipped with a fridge and microwave. The staff is very pally. Added bonus is its proximity to Alpen Sierra (a fabulous café), Carrows Diner and Heavenly Gondola.

If a motel is what you are looking for a decent motel then look no further than El Dorado. It has nice rooms with superb service and it is close to the main attractions of Lake Tahoe.

Best Western Timber Cove Lodge is located close the beach area of the lake. Inside the hotel, the pool is heated and has a spa too. Breakfast at this restaurant is special. It is close to the casinos and Zephyr Cove.

From North Shore, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport half an hour’s car ride and South Shore is an hour’s ride.
